<image:title>Discography - NRR78: Hum of the Druid - "A Strange Export"</image:title>
<image:caption>The first new recordings released since "Predatory Outlook," marking the 15th anniversary of the project, this has glimpses of similarly chilling melodic ambient music but runs a much wider spectrum of industrial noise, electro-acoustic, and pure dark experimental spirit committed to analog 4-track with edges exposed, created intuitively and with some kind of unspoken guidance only worth mentioning in vague terms because that's all I have anyway. In March 2018 I was preparing to record this album and remembered a phrase I had come up with earlier, "A Strange Export," and during a walk that evening the rest of the titles came to me in order. During the next week I recorded every night and this was the result, with only minor finalization taking place over the next month. After recording, I found a sketchbook where I had written "A Strange Export" in the previous year or two, then found another old sketchbook where I had written "A Strange Export" on the back close to 5 years earlier. I don't unconsciously write the same thing multiple times so the phrase seems to have had some ongoing significance that only necessitated use in 2018. The inside j-card features a large drawing scaled down also called "A Strange Export" that was created alongside the creation of its audial namesake. This isn't an explanation, just a description, and this album of dark spiritual industrial music speaks for itself. -Eric Stonefelt 6/13/18 Edition of 100</image:caption>

      <image:title>Discography - NRR77: Shea Stevenson - "Downcycle"</image:title>
<image:caption>Downcycle is varied cut-up in the style of early noise acts like Eric Lunde or Entre Vifs, by way of Alabama. I really hate trying to describe my music..... most of my noise, especially the cut-up though is strongly influenced by the constantly changing environments of my childhood. My fathers schizophrenia manifested in many ways but technophobia was a particular passion. Every electronic device had a secondary purpose more nefarious than its stated aim. I *try* to bring out this character with sound like he would by disassembling them then stack it up as proof but proof of what? That George Bush was electronically murdering my family? Maybe. Regardless, this is the sound of childhood summers wintering in abandoned bus barns situated in parts that will remain undisclosed within central Alabama. -Shea Stevenson, 6/2/18 Edition of 100 Bandcamp Discogs</image:caption>

<image:caption>Over the last decade, Gnawed has released a handful of extremely focused albums that have solidified him as one of the best contemporary death industrial projects. Sourcing field recordings from elaborate urban explorations and incorporating homemade electronics, Gnawed builds an atmosphere that is simultaneously meditative and cathartic. On “Ruin,” Richardson once again proves his work is most effective when presented in the full-length format. Patiently unfolding over the better part of an hour, “Ruin” weaves back and fourth through territory that is both vicious and somber with an impressive sense of restraint. This is by far one of the most fully realized and expertly crafted releases from the project thus far. - Justin Lakes Edition of 100 Bandcamp Discogs</image:caption>

Forcibly Removed 09:24 Total Mom is hyper/abrasive harsh noise from a 16-year-old newcomer on the Providence scene. Don't let the rubbernecking novelty value mislead – this is a potent, varied, and fully realized release which demands serious listening. "child.jpg" and "Sad Dad" will be among the most damaging screech to cross your deck this year, while the clobbering yet spacious album closer "Forcibly Removed" demonstrates the confidence and maturity of a veteran sound artist. When asked to comment on his music, Total Mom instead provided the following thoughts composed by his younger sister: Total Mom does not deserve the space these tapes will take up in the world. Instead of an awful abomination betraying everything music is supposed to be, a boxset of Seinfeld or a musical birthday card could exist. With $10, you could buy a pizza, or your friend a pack of clicky pens, or your dog a nice bone (because it’s what he deserves). Instead, you’re seriously considering throwing it away on the dumb noise a 16 year old (whom I suspect to be simple minded) claims is "music." If you buy this tape, you will regret it. Your grandson will feel the shame of it, and so will his grandson, and his grandson, and his grandson, until everyone with half a mind left has uploaded their brain onto a hard drive, no longer has a physical body, and music is a long lost art. Do not make this mistake. Sibling rivalry aside, No Rent fully stands behind Total Mom and We Fed The Pig My Music. After all, the children are the future. Bandcamp</image:caption>

The summer sessions were no good, so she recorded again in October and November, always very late at night. The sounds come from the same world as Howland’s fiction and describe the encounters of a woman and her frightening, hypnotic teacher. They sit face-to-face in the hot dusty attic of a bungalow occult shop. The windows are covered with translucent white plastic. Later, the woman searches for her mentor in the basement of the house. The basement is stacked with filthy dented boxes from some long-gone family. The woman finds her teacher in a far corner by a door. They succumb to a circle of golden fascination in the coal room. "Problem Child II" is a lonesome yet defiant sophomore release from Lady Shame. It's willfully disorienting, recorded in a time of personal upheaval directly following a cross-country move; it never allows the listener to find footing. There are flashes of clarity where an illusion of a rhythm appears but lasts no longer than a couple of head nods or foot taps before the listener finds themselves back in the implacable fuzz. Rewarding, replay-able, eminently relatable; this tape wipes the tears off its face, puts high heels on and walks alone to the dance party even if it has to repeatedly look up the directions in Waze. <image:title>Discography - NRR64: Buck Young - "Proud Trash Sound"</image:title>
<image:caption>C'mon everybody, it's the end of civilized society....so let's get a few things straight. When the economy collapsed back in the early 20th century, the American avant-garde was driven into academic caves and its composers imperiled and ridiculed. In response, Aaron Copeland's anemic Appalachian Spring eliminated America as relevant on the international stage. Until now... It has been 74 long years, so steal a few tall cans of beer, pull up an old crate or a worn out tire and start a bonfire with your roommates' crap. Add a reasonably functional cassette player and this is new American concert hall. Here lies an indulgent 'program,' in part memorializing a great American dead man, Murdoch. "Murdoch" is a tender dedication signaling the end of side A, allowing you a moment to bottle up your feelings (especially if in company) as you flip sides. In truth, it is Crumer and Sapphogeist, hiding behind Buck Young and Proud Trash Sound. There are pig grunts, scratchy man yodelings, pesky guitars floating around all the time, noise bombs, broads singing all about their 'troubles,' gunfights, grown men weeping into their drunk guitars, pedals and piano (save for Crumer, these are military men) and an epic love story, featuring 'Linda.' Trash Sound has a little Lejaren Hiller, a little '10 notes on a summers day'. These are outstanding sounds manipulated masterfully! As society and the art of noise unravel, its really nice to hear a few of the good ones who give a shit play their cards on the record....in America. -Tom Grimley, American, 2018 9 panel comic and cover art by Brian Blomerth Edition of 100</image:caption>

      <image:title>Discography - NRR63: Muyassar Kurdi - "Travelling"</image:title>
<image:caption>"Travelling” is the sonic foraging of New York based improvisers Muyassar Kurdi and Nicholas Jozwiak. Comprised mostly of the interplay between Kurdi’s phonetic incessantness and vocal toning with Jozwiak’s growling textures and tones on the cello and bass, the record feels like a searchlight in the dark spotting small holes or cracks in the aural landscape that Kurdi and Jozwiak gleefully hone in on and pile drive deep to create moveable foundations. At other times it feels more like a kind of exercise in echolocation, a calling out to the environment to see what kind of information they will receive in order better understand their surroundings and inform their future navigation. Overtones, microtones, raw gravel-y textures, wobbly phrasing along with pointed and sharp repetitions, volume fluctuations are all over this record with moments of Kurdi and Jozwiak following each other and then losing each other to eventually come back together again. “Travelling” is a movement through and through, an unsettling and a passing, an experiment in motion. Yet it is executed with such a fierce playfulness that is most definitely not about “getting anywhere.” In fact, after listening to this record you might question why you would ever consider settling down at all. Keep moving~~ and highly recommended. -Ka Baird Edition of 100</image:caption>

In his early days he did some great noise that involved vinyl and a dog brush, later on some brilliant minimal techno (some of which I released on Audio.NL, a label which I ran in the late 90s/early 00s with Roel Meelkop and Peter Duimelinks) and a few years ago he had a fine, yet much overlooked ambient/guitar/laptop release 'Fitness Landscape', which he recorded with Dan Armstrong. Radboud just mailed me 'Cycle', his latest release, and he stretches out even more into ambient land here. Nine pieces of gentle sounds, made no doubt with the use of laptops and electronics; music that is not very obtrusive, but works rather along the lines of Brian Eno, 12K, Line and White Paddy Mountain - any of the latter three labels could have released this. Whereas much of the current wave of ambient music seems to be about processing acoustic instruments, it seems to me that Radboud uses primarily electronic sounds to create a similar effect. I might be wrong of course. This is some excellent ambient music to wake up to." - Frans de Waard Edition of 100 (out of print) Bandcamp Discogs</image:caption>

<image:caption>1. Damned Piano 33:03 2. Piano Gaucho 30:52 Piano Gaucho carefully develops Bob Bellerue’s tonal infatuation with rendering the piano into a demonic ingress. The piano functions as an essential frame for amps, speakers, mics, pickups, pedals, laptop, and 'guts' to negotiate and re-evaluate the fated instrument into a much more heinous sonic source. Bellerue’s experiments with the instrument mark time slowly against a rotating core of oscillating feedback — a cold, gradual pace that proceeds solemnly. Fascinated with the suspended tension of the piano strings, the pieces’ deliberate pace casts long, shadowy passages of sound — forgoing any rhythmic brutalism in favor of an anxiety that evolves within long intervals of empty space. The exorcised tones breed within these open expanses. Recalling the grim work of bass experimentalists such as Stephen O’Malley or blackened Scandinavian film scores — and all the images contained therein — Bellerue roots the instrumental role of the piano firmly within this space. A wicked piano music is revealed; his commitment to instrument’s sinister potential is total. Nick Scavo Edition of 100 (out of print) Bandcamp Discogs</image:caption>

      <image:title>Discography - NRR27: Ama Divers - "An Echo in the Sound"</image:title>
<image:caption>An Echo in the Sound is a transcendent collection of song writing and ambient studio production, featuring Renee & Brian Mendoza Haran and Chris Girard. Named after the dying art of ocean-floor diving practiced by Japanese women, Ama Divers plunge vulnerably into cold depths and after enduring long, dark, breathless moments, return to the surface for air. Centered around piano compositions and vocal meditations written in the bucolic panorama of rural North Carolina, the backbone of this release was initially conceived by Renee Mendoza Haran, also notable for her vocals in the lush synth-punk group Ashrae Fax. Reflecting on the beautiful yet unforgiving ecosystem of wildlife in the area, the music takes on a prayer-like lamentation of constant growth, survival, futility, and death. She found animals feasting on one another and ensnared by the interventions of civilization, "thinking about human nature and how we are really winding ourselves into a place where the species may not be able to survive." Upon entering the studio, a system of delays and effects were assembled off of the mixing console in which Brian could process each instrument live in an improvisational setting. He steals moments from each channel going forwards and backwards, distorted, in and out of phase, all the while never drowning the delicate instrumentation with his washes of subtle noise and resonant drones. The piano and occasional vocals remain at the heart, with Chris Girard's fragile guitars supporting the atmospheres that shift gracefully from bleak to triumphant. Listening to this release, my ears end up in territory reminiscent of Eno's Music for Films, composer Henryk Gorecki, and the softer moments of both Tuxedomoon and Work/Death. This is a sort of listening that I crave and highly recommend to people of almost any musical preference. - Adam Morosky (Timeghost) Edition of 100 (out of print) Bandcamp Discogs</image:caption>

"Today I think it's always worth fighting against the spectacle machine: media, entertainment, mass will, political drama, etc. In the past I fought against it with the 'Declaration'. Hennies draws parallels between queer identities and being a percussionist in that both are most often defined by what they are not. The particular environment one is in might be a bar where people have refused to be quiet for the band and so the band refuses to actually play, and so one goes outside, comes back in, goes to the john, goes to the bar, has a drink, has a drink. No matter what, the listener has a sense that they and their choices are responsible for what is occurring on the tape. You cannot deny your responsibility. In this environment sound can be understood almost statistically, with location and frequency of occurrence denoting just how ill you really are. - Gabi Losoncy Mastered by Jason Lescalleet Edition of 100 (out of print) Bandcamp Discogs</image:caption>

<image:caption>To Whom it may Concern, Regarding the Band “Pool” For Immediate Release From the Desk of Brian Blomerth Have you ever seen the movie, “Multiplicity”? It’s a great film. This tape would perfectly score that movie as an Opera. Wrrrrrrrrr goes the Lawnmower as Micheal Keaton clones himself to be stupider and more precise. (Mimicking the buzz of home cassette but more on this later…) Have some fun with that phrase. Merk it. Squeeze it. Whisper it softly in an acquaintance’s ear and they will surely be a friend for “Life.” Right before you go into the trash can to look for an ATM you hear your 42nd “Shave Sound” of the day. That’s the Pool. Alex “Nice Life” Tominsky isn’t fooling anyone on this recording, he’s simply stunning here as he is in his day to day life. His contribution of a wet pool noodle on a baking sheet is simply one for the ages. Now what about Ren “Giggling” Schofield? He contributes nothing but a warm smile. Christopher “Hi” Forgues adds his classic tenor of turning a lamp on fast and then slow. It’s truly incredible sonically. Then we have, Eric “Kissyface” Grieshaber who does an impersonation of a duck on this tape that will turn even the most cynical of listerners into staunch “duckheads”. Be the Mallard you want to see in the world. All in all…I learned something listening to this…the best/most terrifying ideas are best listened too on a riding lawnmower stuck in the snow. Appliances are God. Shave your brother. Play this at your next party where you convince your roommate he’s not real. *Dictated but not read, - Brian Blomerth Edition of 100 Bandcamp Discogs</image:caption>

Thanks: Jason Badrich, Brutalitim, Jesseparisitic, Droo, Eastriverdeathsquad, Mom&Dad. Why would you want to release a 15+ year old noise tape, originally put out on cdr in 2002, in 2017, an era with plenty of brand new harsh noise? Well, sorry boys, because it's better. The strength of this specific material was what got Okha on the Macro/Prurient split LP hospital put out forever ago (your best chance of hearing of them). In this age of sound bite based politics seemingly seeping into music its nice to hear something committed to subtlety. You don't know what it is within the first 10 seconds of pressing play; it rewards loyalty and patience, where much modern noise seems to reward "whatever"-WORSHIP. To me this is a good thing. It changes in organic, unpredictable ways, not just quiet to loud / piano loop / drop off sigh. In this way Power Cannot Conquer Heaven is actually abnormal. Proof that you can make long form, gritty, old school American brutality with experimental soul intact. Sounds killer on cassette to boot. - J.C. <image:title>Discography - NRR54: Peter Vincent, A.F. Jones - "Magnifico</image:title>
<image:caption>“You create that space and now you can change that space…" The void that looms large over Magnifico is the death of Peter’s friend and collaborator Taylan Cihan, a musician and instrument-builder whose singular creations are featured prominently on this recording. In a twist that could easily devolve into a cynical meta-narrative about the unintelligibility of experimental music, Peter and Taylan describe the work as two close friends might, in a repartee at turns hilarious and heartbreaking. Taylan playfully mocks some of the sounds at one point, comparing them to “space chickens.” Formally, Magnifico collapses the interview—really, an elegy—into musique concrete and analog electronic chaos. The banter finds gravitas in the visceral and otherworldly sounds, which by themselves already have so much narrative built in. This is music that comes from survival instincts. For those of us coping with many kinds of loss, there is much to learn Peter’s impulse to find something sustainable from that which is designed to do just the opposite. - Jon Pfeffer A.F. Jones’s Invertida, the outward-facing counterpart to Magnifico, re-situates the listener more firmly as a subject existing with/in/side (of) a place, though this place is not bound by any universal perception of time. Both pieces are marked by disjunction and uncertainty - long tones and cyclical sound objects seem to accrue with every rupture, but every rupture threatens to erase any accumulation as well. In Invertida, a sense of ‘place’ gradually permeates the subconscious and radiates into being, fusing with the more indescribable aspects of sensation, supplanting the effect on the nervous system that any environment has and replacing it with sounds that appeal to the listener’s physicality. - Tyler J. <image:caption>When I asked seasoned free-noise performer Lucas Abela (Justice Yeldham, Australia) to submit a tape to NO RENT I half expected a recording of one of his no holds barred glass shattering performances. Instead he surprised me with a collection of micro improvisations titled ‘Gagu’, which were recorded in Yogyakarta, Indonesian five years ago with Rully Shabara (Senyawa / Zoo, Indonesia) and Ramberto Agozolie (Zoo, Indonesia). The Gagu (meaning mute in Indonesian) session was initially set up as a collaboration between Abela and the Indonesian punk band Zoo but unfortunately (or not considering the results) the remaining two members of Zoo were not able to attend. So the glass/vocals/drums trio forged on and laid down these twenty-eight frenetic tracks that bridge between, free jazz, dadaesque poetry and abstract noise. <image:title>Discography - NRR24: Facialmess - "You Trip Me Up"</image:title>
<image:caption>A1 Habit Of Thinking B1 Pessimism Without Compromise The newest effort from Facialmess is an exercise in precision industrial noise that provides all the punches you have come to expect from the project, while growing horns in new directions. On "You Trip Me Up" Sanderson shows restraint and carefully builds environments that have only been alluded to with previous efforts. Taking a dive into deep ambience and heavy industrial grooves Facialmess pushes all angles further than ever before while still maintaining intensity. The attention to detail in his cold, calculated edits creates compositions that build to climax rather than unfurling a constant barrage of cuts and blasts. An essential release for any fan of modern concrete. - Justin Lakes Bandcamp Discogs</image:caption>
